Friday night was a big night; the Sox game was on, and we had a dinner of grilled zucchini, mashed sweet potatoes, and steak. What better accompaniment than a nice big Cabernet Sauvignon. We happened to have a ten year old bottle that I got from work (retail value $90) that I was eager to try. It's not everyday that I drink $90 wines, so I had rather high hopes. The one thing that worried me was Bryan's quick research online, revealing reports of it being past its prime...
We opened it, and those reports were indeed true. "Faded" is the main word I would use to describe it. You could tell it once had a lot going on, but now, all of its elements were diminished. There was faint chocolate and fruit, some tannin, and that was about it. I've had far superior wines from the wine shop around the corner that cost around $15. Shame on the online wine merchant for charging $90 for a wine that they undoubtedly know is too old. But hey, we learned something. Age really is key when it comes to wine, and is something to take into consideration. Though personally, it's not something I have to worry about much, being an impatient wine drinker. For the next Sox game, you can be sure I will head around the corner and get a nice 2005 vintage.
